TUDOR

“The Bookworm”

Tudor is such an excellent example of his breed, a storybook Arabian, with a beautiful blaze and long, flowing sorrel mane. He has gorgeous big strides, and a quiet, contemplative demeanor. So very different from his herd buddy Night, who arrived with him. Both were 12 yo stallions, semi-feral breeding horses, being used by someone without care for their health or training. In the spring of 2021 the owner was forced to surrender nearly 30 Arabians to an area SPCA, who then called upon many others to help take over and care for these horses. Without even halter training, this was a potentially dangerous situation. It was not possible to provide basic vaccines, vet care, dental care, or hoof care without first learning to be handled. Four of these Arabians initially joined the Sanctuary in 2021; Tudor and Night, then the mare Saba, with her colt Kadir. The mare Twist and her newborn colt Zephyr, followed in 2022, and the yearling filly Nadia in 2023.

Upon arrival, Tudor and Night were established in a standalone two stall barn, with secure turnout, to better begin safe handling, while keeping them separated from other horses (read; girls). There were some big explosions soon after arrival, and the power of these stallions was evident. However, they settled into their new routine, and began to respond postiviely to gentle handling. Once they were each able to be haltered, they were gelded, so they could become safe herd members, and leave their breeding (and testosterone infused) behavior behind them. Tudor was being bred that season just before he was surrendered, so it’s very possible that he sired some of the (many) babies born the following year. Large situations such as these take years to correct, with many organizations involved.

Tudor has a very calm overall demeanor and kind energy. Once the boys were gelded and had been introduced over the fence, they were allowed to join the Baywatch Herd on a beautiful 12 acre space called Stardust Meadows. Night landed like the party animal he is, while Tudor, after a bit, trotted back to his own paddock. If there had been a bookshelf and NPR on a radio, he would have been very content. It’s always so interesting watching the natural personalities emerge! Tudor is a lover but not a fighter.

So Tudor allowed Night to steal the Arabians, and may have remained a bachelor entirely, rather than engage in anything unseemly, like battle. But he was too handsome and too kind to be left alone. So, a match was made. Rosemary Farm had welcomed a gorgeous mustang mare, the tall and willowy Katie Scarlett, who was really out of sorts. Katie needed a friend, and Tudor needed a mare that Night wouldn’t steal. The couple were introduced and given a quiet paddock to begin their friendship, and it was a match. Watching the pair find happiness and calmness was beautiful. Once their bond was set, Tudor and Katie returned to the larger herd to enjoy time on the grassy mountain. This is a wonderful turnaround from the wild stallion who arrived!

Tudor is a shining example of the Rosemary Farm mission in action.  Sponsor Tudor today!
