ZEPHYR
“Little Twist”
Zephyr arrived at Rosemary Farm as a ‘baby on board’ his mother Twist. As we do not breed, a live birth is a rarity that was anxiously awaited by everyone here and friends and supporters around the globe and he arrived in the middle of the night late that same month!
Zephyr developed a joint infection at just 3 weeks old, requiring hospitalization to save his life, and while we prefer to let families stay together, the colt had to be separated from his mom for safe treatment. This caused the humans here tremendous anguish leading up to the decision, but it was immediately clear it was the best choice for both. Despite trying her best, Twist was not really interested in being a mom, and the incident meant she was able to be free to ‘just be a horse’ with her old herdmates.
Zephyr spent the second 3 weeks of his life in hospital, receiving the lifesaving care he needed, and was ‘adopted’ by a nurse mare we nicknamed ‘Nanny McPhee.’ For those who wonder, ‘Nanny’ is a professional nurse mare, kept in milk with hormones as opposed to breeding! Nanny McPhee accompanied Zephyr when he returned to Rosemary Farm a healthy foal and remained with him until he was weaned. Zephyr is now growing up trusting humans, knowing care and handling that his mother was never afforded. He has become fast friends with his cousins, the filly Nadia and the colt Kadir. We are delighted to see what his future holds.
