HONEY PIE
Honey Pie is Staydopted and supported for life by the Michele Spencer Family, her dedicated sponsors since 2024.
“Did you hear? I was voted the Cover Girl for our 2025 Calendar! Thank you to all my fans! I’m putting several up in the barn for everyone to see!” — Honey Pie
“Queen of her Domain”
Honey Pie, upon arrival, was not expected to live. In tremendous pain, with a variety of medical issues, her spirit was also damaged, and she had lost hope. She was not old, but was worn out and used up. Fortunately, Rosemary Farm has devoted DVM's, and the team began to tackle Honey Pie's issues one at at time.
Her biggest source of pain was her fetlock, similar to an ankle, which was disintegrating, from overwork. This is similar to a human knee or ankle breaking down, with bone on bone pain. She needed surgery to live. So, Honey Pie went for a 'pastern arthrodesis', a surgery that fuses that bone, and once healed (a process that takes several months) she was able to walk again! Honey Pie also has some skin issues, similar to Lupus, and a condition called 'head shaking', so she needs to be inside during really sunny days and needs persistent supportive care. But as she recovered, she blossomed.
Honey Pie is a senior Haflinger mare, a beautiful golden color and has a wonderful personality. Well trained, intelligent and gentle, she is a charismatic horse and very popular with visitors, even telling fortunes at one of the Sanctuary’s PonyPalooza events! About two years after her first arthrodesis surgery, she needed the same surgery on her other front leg, but is now recovered and very happy, and is sound to be a horse. She enjoys running and playing, but has a dedicated stall for rest.
Honey Pie has 'mothered' several young horses at Rosemary Farm, most importantly the Princess Yanaha, who was very small and in need of her kindness. The pair spent a year together, in between Honey Pie's surgeries, until Yanaha was ready to move into the larger herd.
In recent years, Honey Pie was the constant companion of Iron, a handsome senior Thoroughbred who doted on her. The duo greeted tour groups and enjoyed grooming and treats until he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Since his passing, Honey Pie has been exploring new friendships with Jet and Heidi.
This beautiful senior is one of a dozen equines at Rosemary Farm supported for life by a dedicated donor under our Staydoption™ program. And so the circle of love continues.
