MIRA

“The Wonder”

The beautiful Mir-cat was nearly not, she was one of the more dramatic rescues to happen one dark night at auction, where a large group of young Thoroughbred mares found themselves selling quickly to slaughter. Mira was bleeding from her skull, having reared up during trailering, and was stumbling, and obviously in foal. She looked so bad that the kill buyer didn't even want her on his rig, and she was rescued and arrived late that night to Rosemary Farm. Her prognosis was poor at first, as she tripped and panicked, trying to retreat to the darkest recesses of the barn. She was not tattooed as a normal Thoroughbred is, and had a large scar on a rear leg, so her story was easy to piece together; likely she had an accident training for the track, and was kept alive to breed. The barn had too many bills, and cleaned house, sending a bunch of the young mares and broodmares to auction, where Mira found herself loaded and sold. Of course she was terrified.

Named by a kind supporter after a Shakespearian heroine, she has lived up to the moniker. She lost her pregnancy, but regained strength and mind, and found life again. Mira has become one of the more personable and athletic horses in her group of senior friends, often leaping and bucking for the sheer joy of being alive. She is a big boned dark thoroughbred, obviously from impressive lines, and embraces life with the eagerness of one who nearly lost it, aware of how close she came. Mira is currently best friends with the pony mare Melody, and the two split time out in the field and hanging out with the senior Hafflinger, Duncan.

In 2021, Mira was having increased breathing issues, and was admitted to the equine hospital for a thorough exam. A very large tumorous growth was discovered in her throat, obstructing 85% of her airway, and requiring an emergency tracheotomy. This was followed by surgery to remove the tumor, which was benign. After a short hospital stay, Mira returned home, completed recovery, and has returned to her high energy, happy self.

Mira is a shining example of the Rosemary Farm mission. Sponsor Mira and you can make sure she can simply be a horse.
