“Love a man in a uniform”

In the midst of an extended snowfall, we found ourselves bidding goodbye to a dear friend. Our senior thoroughbred Freddy was discovered early morning in distress, the symptoms, confusing. He was nearly 29 years old so any issue was of concern, and we reached out to DVMs for help. With one on the phone, another on the way, we attempted to help our boy, but it was his time to go. Clues actually point to a cardiac arrest, not something we have seen here before, which was part of our confusion, and now we are left to both mourn and appreciate this tall and handsome boy.

Freddy was on the track briefly, before a two year stint as a Long Island police horse. Then he became a trail horse, and had a few owners before landing at Rosemary Farm Sanctuary in 2010, when he was about 16 years old. He was placed twice on Foster-to-Adopt contracts but was eventually returned both times through no fault of his own. Fred was dogged by thin soles and but could be sound with proper hoof boots, but we were not going to risk his heart again, so he remained here. He was a charmer with the mares and a loyal friend, especially to Duncan, and they were most recently dubbed “the grumpy uncles” watching over the colt Zephyr. Fred was always a gentleman, and will be much missed at the barn.

Godspeed Freddy boy.
