The Racing Horses

The two iconic racing breeds, Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds, are common in the Northeast, and show up in need often. There are many views about racing, about the age of the horse when started, about the methods of training and the consequences. At the Sanctuary, young horses are raised by other horses as well as humans. And while 3 year olds race for the Triple Crown, at Rosemary Farm, they not started under saddle until they are at least 4 years old, and then lightly, as both the bones and the brain are still continuing to develop. An enormous industry, the care of the horses is as wide-ranging as the owners themselves.

These racing beauties arrive here at all stages, fresh off the track, after serving as a broodmare, after a second or third career as a jumper or a police horse. Bloodlines and legacies, starts and earnings are often available for those who were registered. Whatever life they may have had before, they found themselves in dire circumstances, a horse in need.

Rosemary Farm has been home to a long line of Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds over the years, and care for the following group today.
