BAILEY

Bailey is Staydopted and supported for life by Joss L., his dedicated donor since 2022.

“Whuffle”

There is nothing as musical as a horse looking forward to their next meal, as they watch someone making a special dish just for them, wagging their head in anticipation, eyes focused and happy. To be able to BE happy, to know food is coming, is a great gift, one that most of the horses that are rescued did not have guaranteed in their past. Bailey was rescued from certain slaughter in the fall of 2022, when his life was saved by a bidder outbidding the kill buyer at auction. Bailey looked old and worn out, his severely dropped swayback, missing teeth, thick hair matted with sores, a ribby, skinny body, and most distressing, a broken spirit. He was a horse who knew exactly where he was and how much trouble he was in.

Lucky for Bailey he got into the trailer headed to Rosemary Farm.

Bailey’s recovery has been precarious. Many mental issues intermingled with physical ones, from fear, anxiety, grief, and longing, to regular falls, chokes, fighting meds, concern for any straps that may signal he was going to be ridden again… Bailey told his caregivers many stories with his actions, and they were dark tales full of pain. One by one, his issues were addressed; his long neglected teeth were filed, he was wormed and his ulcers treated. He learned to wear a blanket, and to start to trust his stall and his care. He tried making friends, but that is still in process.

The biggest improvement for Bailey came from the chiropractic treatments that helped free up his head and neck, and stopped his chokes and his falling. Once his nasty winter fur shed out, Bailey began to grow in a beautiful chestnut coat. His clean feet revealed tiny white socks above striped hooves. His head is carried higher, his eyes are bright, and his favorite thing is to be scratched on this withers. A medicated bath helped skin issues, and walks outside are getting his muscles stronger. Bailey is enjoying a second round of life.

Bailey is a senior, and he does have many issues that can’t be fixed, so the team knows that his time may not be long, but everyone is committed to his happiness and well being. And everyone enjoys the special ‘whuffle’ sound he makes as his soaked meals are prepared, several times each day. If that’s not happiness, what is?

Bailey is currently courting the lovely Gracie, who is spending more time up in the Medical Wing.
