“The Dappled Beauty”
This quiet buckskin Paso Fino mare has had, like too many horses, too many homes, too many starts and stops and starts again. This shakes the confidence of a horse, who lose friends over and over, damaging their psyche, their self-assurance, and their ability to make friends. Magpie started life with a quality breeder, and sold to a home with great intentions but too little time. Training waited and waited. Too young, her owner died, and after another stretch of waiting, Magpie moved to a trainer, then moved again to another home, which should have been it... but there she waited, again, still not getting the love and attention that would have helped her blossom and feel confident. When that family reached out for help, Rosemary Farm was finally able to welcome Magpie, and connected with this wonderful mare.
As a sound purebred mare, many adopters were interested, and what seemed like a great home was selected, and she was adopted...but what ought to have been a happy ending was not. Rushed in training, after all those years without, when what she needed was a calm hand and patience, Magpie was too stressed, and was eventually returned. The adoption contracts are such an important tool for protection, and got her safely home to The Sanctuary.
Magpie took some time to reunite with friends, and has resisted all gentle attempts to discuss being a riding horse, and at Rosemary Farm, her limitations are respected. Today at 20 years old, she relies on her equine friends, finding happiness and strength in the herd, one of the huge benefits of living at The Sanctuary.
