“Whuffle”

The brave Bailey, rescued from a life of torture that he sought to overcome every day of his two years at Rosemary Farm Sanctuary, has been laid to rest.

This chestnut gelding will be remembered by our many visitors who enjoyed grooming and cuddling with him, and brushing his soft fur and silky mane. Bailey had come to love the attention he received, and looked forward to the visits from his favorite friends. This was a far cry from the shut down, thin wreck of a horse that we rescued for a few hundred dollars. Bailey's mind was intact, making his abandonment even worse; he knew where he was that night at auction. Likely born with a severe swayback, Bailey nonetheless was ridden, in pain, and kept locked up, he developed the habit of cribbing, costing him his teeth, affecting his ability to chew. He would choke on food when he arrived, and would spook, and fall, his body locked up from pain. Chiropractic treatments with Dr. Dutton worked miracles on him, allowing him to live a bit more like a 'normal' horse again, and regain some health. His confidence, however, was shot, with other horses, and he only obtained limited friendships. Bailey's skin was thick with rainrot, shedding out bald, and it took a year for his itching and fur to come back in. So very much we were able to restore, and happy to do so.

Early in his stay, Bailey charmed a guest, who became his Staydopter for his two years here, covering his basic needs and visiting. Having someone in your corner matters, and Bailey had many who loved him.

As we entered into this winter and some of Bailey's issues would not resolve, and he was facing a painful cold season, it was decided to let him go on a sunny calm day. With his people at his side, the great horse, who fought so hard, was laid to rest. While not as long of a stay as some horses, we hope that his last chapter, filled with kindness and care, changes how he remembers his time on this Earth.

We will surely not forget him.

This is rescue and Sanctuary, a sacred path we walk, and together with all of YOU, we change lives for the better.
