AVA
“The Beautiful Bedhead”
This petite and especially beautiful Haflinger mare looked nothing like this when she was first spotted at auction in 2012. There, she was thin, malnourished, and suspicious...and for good reason. Aside from the pervasive fear of being at an auction, she had a tiny baby at her side, and unbeknownst to us at the time, another baby on the way. At first she tried to greet the strangers, but as more and more wanted to grab her baby, she became defensive, and things only got worse. Cornered and terrified, she did everything she could to protect herself and her filly. Of course Rosemary Farm saved the pair and brought them to safety at The Sanctuary.
Ava got to keep the filly at her side, Jess, but scars take time to heal. A few days after the trauma of auction, she lost her pregnancy, all too common for horses. Slowly, the pair began to find some health and happiness with the humans and horses of Rosemary Farm. Ava blossomed into a gorgeous and healthy purebred Haflinger, and her filly a bright pinto pattern, a Haflinger cross, and they made friends and found family. But as is often the case, the momma remembers what the baby has forgotten, and while Jess grew up trusting and confident, Ava has not entirely lost the shadow on her heart. Now in her mid teens and a longtime resident of Rosemary Farm, she finally has a measure of peace and faith in the world.
