Barn Manager
Full Time Hourly Position
The primary responsibilities of the Barn Manager are to oversee the proper care of our horses, supervise employees and volunteers in performing daily work, and manage the overall successful operation of the barns. This is a staff management role; Equine Caregivers and Barn Hands report to this position.
Responsibilities
Horse Care
Work with the Executive Director to create, update and oversee the implementation of a weekly feed, supplement, medication, care, exercise and training checklist
Work with the Executive Director to create, update and oversee training and enrichment programs
Monitor daily physical and emotional health of the equines; recognize and review concerns with Executive Director (eating issues, behavioral issues, injuries)
Manage schedule of veterinarians, trimmers, body workers and other equine professionals; coordinate plans and attend visits
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all equines
Manage any equine emergencies that arise
Perform basic first aid, and administer oral and IM medications, as needed
Manage end-of-life plans with approval of Executive Director
Staff Management
Hire, train and terminate staff
Train and supervise volunteers
Schedule all work shifts
Review and approve all timesheets
Give feedback on job performance and coach on improvements
Resolve problems and manage issues escalated by staff and/or volunteers
Recognize employees for good work, anniversaries and accomplishments
Barn Operations
Ensure facilities are a clean, safe, accessible and welcoming environment for all
Develop and oversee barn maintenance calendar of daily, weekly, monthly and other periodic activities
Manage inventory of feed, supplements, medications, bedding and other supplies; order replenishments as needed to ensure availability when needed
Manage inventory of equine equipment (blankets, sheets, halters, leads, boots, tack); keep it orderly and maintained in good condition
Ensure facilities meet or exceed animal welfare standards and all staff adheres to workplace safety requirements
Other
Perform daily hands-on work as needed, including but not limited to turn in, turn out, mucking, cleaning, feeding, watering
Support other Sanctuary activities as needed, including but not limited to adoptions, tours, events
Qualifications
At least five (5) years progressive experience managing the care of multiple equines (more than 30 required; more than 50 preferred)
At least two (2) years experience managing staff
Willing and able to perform all responsibilities and duties
Solid working knowledge of equine behavior, equine medical conditions, equine handling
Experience performing basic first aid including wrapping, administering medication, administering shots
Experience driving a trailer to transport horses
Welcoming and tolerant personality with a sense of humor
Able to effectively prioritize responsibilities, organize workload and respond promptly to urgent situations.
Inspired to learn and improve and open to taking direction
Excellent communication skills and willingness to have open honest discussions
Demonstrates and maintains a positive and respectful attitude
Strong team player always willing to help and motivated to develop others
Strong customer service mindset and high expectations for quality
Able to perform strenuous physical labor, and consistently lift and carry at least 50 pounds unassisted
Capable of working in harsh/all weather conditions
Willing and able to work weekend and holiday shifts
Willing and able to work long overtime hours in emergencies
Equine sciences education or vet tech training a plus
Prior animal rescue experience a plus
Must have the legal right to work in the United States
Schedule
7:00am - 4:00pm with one hour lunch break; schedule may have some flexibility
Five (5) days a week including at least one weekend day

Pay commensurate with experience, with opportunity for increases with excellent performance
