“The Phantom”-one eyed big strong pale Appaloosa gelding mix, experienced trail horse, with emotional baggage; saved from slaughter by RF summer of 2010. 16hh, 14 yo, sound, but deeply troubled. After a meaningful few years of trying to work together, we seemed to be at the end of safe options. As we shared our struggle, we were given a generous gift; our friends at Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary offered to welcome our Phantom. With their mild climate, open plan for keeping horses, no barns or training and almost no visitors, the things that caused Phantom stress would be removed. It was a risk, because it meant transporting him 14 hours south, to Georgia, and hoping that is worked. We left early one summer evening, driving straight through all night. We arrived, tired, hot, emotional. “Take off his halter”, Melody said, and we did. And Phantom ran off the rig and into his new life. After a few short hours he had chosen a mare and it’s now been three years, they are inseparable, and Phantom has found peace at last.
